optimal state through their passion for sauna culture.
From among more than 12,000 sauna facilities across Japan,
establishments are evaluated based on multiple criteria
including:

Reason for selection
This newly opened men's-only capsule hotel and sauna facility
boasts a prime location just a minute's walk from Tokyo's
Oimachi Station. The setup is compact yet luxurious, offering
everything a sauna enthusiast could want. The first floor houses
the accommodation area, while the second floor features two
distinct saunas and three types of cold plunge baths.
Additionally, there’s an open-air bath and a ceramic tub bath on
the rooftop for a relaxing outdoor experience.
The sauna
options include "KUU (空)", a large 25-person sauna designed for
Aufguss sessions, and "ZEN (禅)", a tatami-matted semi-private
room equipped with a Kneipp shower for cooling down. The cold
plunge baths offer a range of temperatures: the "Single" bath is
set below 10°C, the "Little Mermaid" bath, with a depth of 140
cm and 18°C, allows for full submersion, and the "Neutral
Relaxation" bath, set at a more comfortable 30°C, invites users
to lie down for a soothing experience.
For the final stage
of relaxation, guests can unwind in the open-air bath known as
"Heaven" or opt for the peaceful "Night on the Planet" indoor
relaxation room, where a starry sky is projected onto the
ceiling. Despite its compact size, the facility is carefully
designed to offer a full range of sauna experiences, embodying
the concept of "escaping the stresses of the world" in the
perfect urban sauna retreat.

Reason for selection
The "kara-furo" is said to have been created by the high priest
Gyoki about 1,300 years ago when he came to Sanuki to cure
people's illnesses. The stone chamber, made of Toyoshima stone,
measures 1.2 meters wide and 2.7 meters deep, and consists of
two types: "the cool side" and "the hot side." Inside the
chamber, firewood is stacked and burned for about an hour along
with pine needles, and wet mats and coverings are alternately
laid down with salt sprinkled on top. Another mat is placed over
that, the entrance door is closed, and after steaming for about
an hour, the preparation is finally complete. Dressed in
long-sleeved clothing and wrapped in a hood, sandals, and a
blanket, one enters the stone chamber and sits on the mat.
Of
the two chambers that are heated twice a day, the one heated
first is referred to as "the cool side," while the chamber that
is heated just before use, known as "the hot side," can reach
temperatures of 150 to 170 degrees Celsius. The experience of
being enveloped by the accumulated heavy heat is something that
cannot be experienced anywhere else.
A sauna is originally a sacred place that heals both the body
and the mind. You can experience this in its truest form at
"kara-furo." Enveloped in overwhelming heat, your inner wildness
awakens. The stone chamber, which is carefully steamed over time
and effort, undoubtedly holds a mysterious energy that is
invisible to the eye.
While there is no cold bath, and you
simply wash off your sweat in the shower, the emotional impact
awaiting you makes that seem unimportant. This is the world’s
only and oldest smoke sauna that reveals the essence of what a
sauna truly is.
Now is the time for Japanese sauna
enthusiasts to return to their roots right here.

The "Aomori Nebuta Sauna," located within "Hoshino Resorts
Aomoriya," was created with the concept of "Nore Sore (※) Aomori
~ Stories of People and Places." This sauna celebrates the
culture of Aomori through its festivals, hot springs, cuisine,
and dialect. The sauna is themed around the famous Aomori Nebuta
Festival, with a stunning display of an authentic Nebuta crafted
by the "Takenami Hiroo Nebuta Institute," led by the
7th-generation Nebuta master, Hiroo Takenami, sitting proudly
behind the stove.
The space is filled with Nebuta-inspired
motifs, such as a red-and-white heater guard designed to
resemble the hand grips used by the float pullers during the
festival. Every detail is a tribute to Nebuta, creating a unique
entertainment space that’s bound to amaze sauna enthusiasts from
around the world.
※ "Nore Sore" is an Aomori dialect
phrase meaning "to the fullest."
This is Japan’s first festival-themed concept sauna, and it goes
far beyond simply incorporating elements of the Nebuta Festival
into the sauna. Inside the sauna room, there is an awe-inspiring
Nebuta display created by a team of skilled artisans who have
won multiple awards, including the Nebuta Grand Prize. The sheer
scale and detail of the Nebuta are breathtaking. Additionally,
festival music ("matsuribayashi") plays inside the sauna, and
the automatic löyly (steam infusion) is synchronized with the
rhythm of the music, allowing guests to feel the heat and energy
just like at the Aomori Nebuta Festival.
The sauna stove is
adorned with sauna stones shaped like Nebuta warriors and the
"Goldfish Nebuta," a summer tradition in Aomori. The benches
feature sauna mats designed with the peony flower, a symbol from
the Tsugaru clan's crest, commonly seen on the Nebuta floats.
Even the 12-minute sand timer on the wall is decorated with
images of the "Haneto" dancers, who bring the festival to life
with their energetic leaps.
This is not the type of sauna
experience where you quietly immerse yourself in
contemplation—quite the opposite. It's an exciting,
entertainment-infused sauna that offers a vibrant and unique
experience. If you're looking for a sauna that will make your
heart race, this one-of-a-kind Nebuta-themed sauna is a
must-try.

The "Nekoyacho Building," designed by the architectural firm
SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE, led by architects Makoto Tanijiri and Ai
Yoshida, based in Tokyo and Hiroshima, is home to a unique
creation: the semi-outdoor sauna "Hiki Stargazing Sauna,"
located on the rooftop of the five-story building. The sauna
features a distinctive view of a small courtyard garden through
the window, where sunlight streams in from the open sky or,
depending on the weather, rain may fall. Visitors can enjoy a
constantly changing landscape that shifts with the seasons and
weather, offering a one-of-a-kind experience.
The
relaxation space also provides a semi-outdoor atmosphere, where
part of the ceiling opens up to the sky. During the day, you can
gaze at the sunlight or falling rain, and at night, enjoy a
serene view of the stars, offering the ultimate outdoor
relaxation experience. Although it’s inside a building, this new
urban sauna style brings you close to nature, gently awakening
your senses and providing a soothing, sensory-rich experience.
The concept of "Shashokudo," a cafeteria for both employees and
the community, combined with a gallery and event space, the
headquarters of an architectural firm, a co-working space, and a
sauna, has created a small commercial facility that is
energizing the streets of Hiroshima. This is a place where you
can enjoy "eating, working, and relaxing."
The courtyard
visible from the sauna and the open-ceiling relaxation space are
designed not only for their visual beauty but also to allow
visitors to fully experience nature, from sunlight to rain. A
sauna designed by architects really brings something unique!
The
sauna room is equipped with two heating systems: a self-service
stove for pouring water (löyly) and a bonus sauna installed at
the back, ensuring the room is perfectly heated with a luxurious
feel. The wood used is aromatic Western Red Cedar, enveloping
the space in a pleasant scent as you face the natural beauty of
the courtyard.
This office building with a sauna, where
"food, work, and play" intersect, is transforming the atmosphere
of the city.

This lakeside sauna, set against the breathtaking backdrop of
Mount Fuji and Lake Yamanaka, features a distinctive modern
architectural design inspired by the "kasagumo" (cap cloud) that
sometimes forms over Mount Fuji. The innovative structure
immediately captures attention and offers unparalleled views of
the iconic mountain and lake.
Following the Finnish sauna
tradition, where saunas serve as social spaces, this facility
allows mixed-gender groups to enjoy conversations and the sauna
ritual of "löyly" together. Located at the deepest part of the
Mount Fuji-inspired building, the sauna maintains a gentle
temperature of 80–85°C, enveloping visitors in the soothing
scents of wood and aromatic oils.
The cold plunge baths,
separated by gender, are filled with natural spring water from
the Mount Fuji system, maintained at a refreshing 12°C
year-round and are even safe to drink. After a revitalizing dip,
guests can relax in the open-air cooling area while gazing at
Mount Fuji. To complete the experience, the second-floor
panoramic lounge offers unobstructed 360-degree views of the
changing scenery of Mount Fuji and Lake Yamanaka across all
seasons and times of day. Visitors can enjoy this stunning view
while sipping on drinks or savoring sweets.
Praised as one
of the most photogenic saunas, offering possibly the most
beautiful views of Mount Fuji, it has quickly become a
must-visit destination.
This lakeside sauna, boasting a stunning view and natural
surroundings on the shores of Lake Yamanaka, is a standout for
its unique modern architectural design by YU Momoeda Architects
and construction by Marumasa Watanabe Construction of Kofu City.
The building’s innovative structure immediately sets it apart in
the scenic landscape.
Unlike saunas intended for solitary,
silent reflection, this facility encourages group sauna sessions
where people can converse and enjoy the sauna together. Thanks
to the soft lighting, however, the atmosphere remains respectful
and peaceful, creating a pleasant environment for "löyly"
communication. While the sauna is a public one where men and
women wear swimsuits, cold plunge baths are separated by gender,
and the outdoor cooling area is thoughtfully divided into a
general mixed-gender area and a women-only space—this careful
attention to privacy is a notable highlight.
Adding to the
appeal is the panoramic lounge, offering guests something to
look forward to after their sauna session. The admission fee
includes free drinks and one mini dessert, while guests can also
indulge in the specialty "Sapa-parfait" (a sweet-and-salty
parfait) created by Shimizu Misato for an additional charge.
This
lakeside sauna, with its distinctive charm and one-of-a-kind
offerings, has quickly become a popular spot among sauna
enthusiasts, even though it has only been open for a short time.

"Bettei Senjuan," a highly regarded inn, has been a member of
the globally prestigious association *Relais & Châteaux* and was
nominated for the "World Luxury Hotel Awards," often referred to
as the "Academy Awards of the travel industry," in 2016, 2017,
2018, 2019, and 2023. It has received high praise both
domestically and internationally.
In addition to the
striking main bath sauna, featuring walls made of binchotan
charcoal and expansive views of lush greenery through its
windows, the newly introduced guest-only private sauna is truly
exceptional.
After a walk through the garden, guests will
find the "3u7 Mt.1977"—a mirrored box that blends seamlessly
into the surrounding nature. Sitting on the bench, you are met
with a sauna stove and a large window, offering a view so
picturesque it feels like a work of art framed before you. While
a cold plunge filled with natural hot spring water is available,
guests can also descend the steps to bathe directly in the river
and enjoy an exquisite outdoor rest by the riverside.
This
is the ultimate luxury: experiencing a sauna where all five
senses connect with the great outdoors, at a world-class luxury
inn.
Designed by the world-renowned architect Takao Habuka, this
globally recognized luxury inn features traditional Japanese
materials such as earthen walls, washi paper, and stone in a
stunning blend of beauty. All 18 guest rooms come with private
open-air hot spring baths that flow directly from the source,
offering views of Mount Tanigawa and the clear stream of the
Tanigawa River that runs alongside the property.
The large
public bath, renovated in 2020, already made a lasting
impression with its curved benches that fit the body perfectly,
scenic views from the windows, cold plunge pools filled with hot
spring water, and the liberating experience of outdoor
relaxation while surrounded by nature. However, the private
sauna has an even greater impact.
True to its concept, "A
sauna you must experience at least once in your life," the
presence and experiential value of this sauna are overwhelming.
While luxurious, it also offers a unique connection with nature
and tranquility, creating an extraordinary space where you can
savor unforgettable moments.

Reason for selection
This sauna, the only one in Japan where you can enjoy
breathtaking views of the UNESCO World Heritage site of
Shiretoko's pristine nature and watch drifting ice as you relax,
offers a truly unique experience. There are two types of saunas:
the "KAKUUNA," with a bold, linear design inspired by the
dynamic shapes of the drifting ice, and the "UNEUNA," featuring
gentle, flowing curves that evoke a wooden cave. The
three-dimensional design of the "UNEUNA," carved from wood using
advanced 3D techniques, has gained attention from sauna
enthusiasts around the world.
This year, the rooftop space
"TOKONOU TERRACE" has reopened after renovation, allowing guests
to enjoy an exceptional outdoor cooling experience under the
crisp, clear Hokkaido air, with a stunning starry sky at
night.
For the third time this year, the sauna has won the
prestigious "SAUNACHELIN" award and has now been inducted into
the hall of fame.
The sauna's unparalleled presence, combined with the
breathtaking panoramic views from its windows, makes it truly
one of a kind. It has rightfully earned its place in the hall of
fame without question.
The operator, Kitakobushi Resort,
manages four distinct brands of accommodations: "Kitakobushi
Shiretoko Hotel & Resort," "KIKI Shiretoko Natural Resort,"
"Shiretoko Yuhinoataruie ONSEN HOSTEL," and "PRIVATE COTTAGE
Lantern SHIRETOKO." Across all these facilities, they offer an
impressive variety of saunas—11 in total—creating a "Sauna Mecca
of the North" in Shiretoko within just three years. This
achievement is nothing short of remarkable.
I highly
recommend making a "sauna trip" to Shiretoko to experience
firsthand the overwhelming passion for saunas that permeates
this region.

This urban sauna facility, located on the fourth floor of a
building in the bustling Shinsaibashi-suji shopping district,
packs eight uniquely themed saunas—such as "River," "Warehouse,"
"Garden," "Forest," "Tea Room," "Hanare," "Water Surface," and a
private sauna called "Musubi"—along with four cold plunge baths
into a space spanning over 200 tsubo (around 660 square meters).
Each sauna is high-quality, yet full of playful, creative
touches.
One of the most intriguing saunas is the "River
Sauna," which features a cold plunge bath inside the sauna
itself. Guests can jump straight into the bath, dive underwater,
and swim through a wall to reach the outside. This entertaining
sauna experience has been featured in various media outlets and
has become a hot topic.
In addition to the saunas, the
facility offers an array of high-quality "sauna meals" (known as
"sa-meshi"), such as their signature curry oden and tofu rice.
They also offer original merchandise ranging from t-shirts to
varsity jackets, and host events like Aufguss and whisks with
renowned guest appearances.
True to its name, this
facility has quickly become the epicenter of Osaka's vibrant
sauna culture.
Since its grand opening in April 2023, the facility has
undergone numerous updates, including the renovation of six
sauna rooms, reaching a new level of excellence. In 2024, it was
honored with its first Saunachelin award, solidifying its status
as one of Osaka's premier sauna destinations.
The facility,
which spans over 200 tsubo (approximately 660 square meters),
has a clever design that allows it to be divided into two
sections by closing just one door. This enables the space to be
split into a men's and women's bath area. Normally, the baths
are reserved for men, but the system allows flexibility,
offering mixed-gender days once a week and women's days once a
month. This adaptable system, which caters to a variety of
users, has been highly praised.
The concept symbol of the
facility, DESSE, is “Saikou!” (meaning "the best!"). Whether
you're a beginner or a seasoned sauna enthusiast, the goal is
for everyone to experience the "best" sauna moments. With its
constant improvements, this facility will undoubtedly continue
to evolve and deliver unforgettable sauna experiences.

Reason for selection
"SteaMs." is a women-only sauna concept, born from the fusion of
three words: STEAM (steam or vapor), Ms. (a term representing
women), and tea (in a broad sense, referring to herbs and
leaves). This sauna offers a refined, rich steam sauna
experience that uses water, which has a higher heat conductivity
than air, to efficiently raise core body temperature, promote
deep sweating, and focus on rejuvenating the "skin, hair, and
gut." It’s designed as a beauty sauna that revitalizes the body
from the inside out.
The facility features two types of
steam saunas: a "self-maintenance steam sauna" and an "herbal
sauna," which allows users to absorb the natural benefits of
herbs throughout the body. By alternating between the two,
guests can immerse themselves in refreshing steam, performing
self-care while achieving both mental and physical beauty.
This
innovative sauna is all about enhancing beauty, balance, and
recovery. It’s a brand-new type of sauna experience, created by
women, for women, where beauty and well-being come together in
perfect harmony.
This innovative women-only treatment sauna offers the ultimate
in relaxation, combining two creative steam sauna options
designed to help women feel beautiful and rejuvenated. Imagine
being in a luxurious, personal bubble—set at the perfect
temperature of 45°C with 100% humidity—where you can enjoy
uninterrupted self-care. It’s like turning your whole body into
a facial steamer, where you can indulge in cleansing,
shampooing, treating your hair, and even scrubbing your skin,
all in one comforting space.
Unlike traditional saunas that
follow a routine of sauna, cold bath, and rest, this space
introduces a new approach where there’s no need for enduring
discomfort. Instead, it's about creating a relaxation
environment where women can feel good without compromise. It's
like stepping into a serene, spa-like haven that caters entirely
to your needs.
This fresh take on sauna culture is bound to
inspire and spread a new wave of sauna experiences for women.

In April 2023, Tokyo’s Akasaka saw the opening of the largest
sauna facility in the Kanto region, which ranked second in the
2023 "SAUNACHELIN" awards. This facility quickly gained
significant attention as "Tokyo’s new paradise."
The
facility boasts five distinct themed saunas, including the
auto-löyly sauna "Jouki-Ranbu," the self-löyly sauna
"Tejaku-Jouki," the meditation sauna "Meisou," the steam sauna
"Todana Mushiburo," and the super dry sauna "Showa Enseki." In
addition, there are three cold plunge baths with varying water
temperatures and a 60-seat relaxation space.
With
continuous updates and large-scale renovations, the facility
constantly evolves, offering special events such as Ladies' Day
and gatherings centered around "STAT," the sauna Aufguss team
based in Tokyo. These developments have captivated sauna
enthusiasts and made the venue a favorite destination for many.
The sauna facility, which opened a year and a half ago, made a
big splash with its PR strategy by releasing a YouTube anime
series featuring the character "Totonon" as the protagonist.
Since then, the facility has continuously grown, starting with
the expansion of a dining space in the basement and making
several upgrades to improve its quality, solidifying its
reputation as Tokyo's premier sauna destination.
This year,
the basement underwent further renovations, adding over 30
reclining chairs and a collection of more than 10,000 manga
books, as well as starting late-night food service,
significantly enhancing the experience for sauna enthusiasts.
Sauna
Tokyo is constantly evolving and remains a hot topic of

ever-improving offerings.

An experiential art installation created by Takashi Kuribayashi,
the only artist from Japan invited to the world-renowned
international art exhibition "documenta 15" (2022) held in
Germany. The "Ohya Genki-Ro," located in Utsunomiya City,
Tochigi Prefecture, is the world's first permanent Genki Ro
(wellness furnace).
Since the Great East Japan Earthquake
and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011,
Kuribayashi has been visiting Fukushima, pondering whether it is
possible to transform negative experiences into positive ones
through art. This led to the birth of the Genki Ro. The
installation involves placing herbs into a large furnace to boil
water, then sending the steam through pipes into a structure
resembling a "nuclear reactor," creating a space filled with
steam sauna conditions for the audience to experience.
In
this "Genki Ro," participants sweat in herbal steam,
transforming everything into positivity through art, becoming a
part of the artwork itself.
The giant tree-like presence that suddenly appears at the site
of the Ohya stone quarry leaves an overwhelming impact. Inside
the Genki Ro, filled with steam, the environment resembles a
dense steam sauna where visibility extends only about one meter.
As vision fades, the sense of smell sharpens, allowing one to
deeply appreciate the aroma of the herbs. The steam warms the
body from within, creating a sensation of becoming increasingly
revitalized.
This experience, where one immerses in the
artwork and becomes part of it, evokes all the senses and is
truly one-of-a-kind. The Genki Ro has been recognized with a
special award as an "experiential art installation."

Located just in front of Oimachi Station, this men's-only capsule hotel and sauna facility is known for its incredible cost-performance, starting at just ¥980 for a 60-minute session on weekdays. Despite its modest price, the facility offers an impressive open-air bath and rooftop bathing space, providing an unparalleled sense of openness and relaxation. While the facility is primarily for men, they do host Ladies’ Days, and the turnout on the first event was overwhelmingly positive.
What sets this facility apart is the attention to detail and the clear passion for saunas that is infused into every aspect of its design. It feels like a culmination of research from sauna facilities across Japan, combining the best elements into one cohesive experience. From the layout to the materials used, every part of the sauna experience has been carefully considered.
What’s particularly notable is the fact that just three weeks after opening, the facility underwent a temporary closure for nearly three weeks to carry out a series of upgrades and improvements. These changes included fixing drainage in the washing area, adding more lighting, adjusting the steps to the cold plunge bath, improving air circulation in the bathing area, reworking the flooring and tiles in the sauna rooms, repositioning the heat reflectors, extending the handrails on the stairs, removing artificial turf from the rooftop, and installing air circulators.
